About Us
We publish a free, modern browser version of FreeCell — the classic all-cards-visible patience game — with unlimited undo, hints, safe auto-play, and a layout that works on any screen.
Our craft
Nothing hidden. Everything planned.
Deal every card face up, keep the free cells honest, lift every suit home. That loop is everything we design around.
Cards, all visible

What we make
playfreecell.app is the site behind our version of FreeCell. The product is a single-player card game: deal all 52 cards face up across eight columns, use four free cells as scratch space, build the tableau down in alternating colours, and move all 52 cards to four foundation piles built by suit from Ace to King.
We are not an app-store publisher and there is nothing to download. The game is the website. That keeps load times short, works on phones and desktops alike, and avoids an account wall. Best times, scores, move counts, and streaks live in local browser storage on your device.
If you are comparing this to another FreeCell site, this page only speaks for playfreecell.app. The rules and scoring described in our how-to-play guide and FAQ match this exact build.
Our story
FreeCell has one of the more traceable histories of any popular solitaire. We treat that as a responsibility to get the rules exactly right and the friction as close to zero as we can.
FreeCell descends from "open" patience games — solitaires dealt entirely face up — including Baker’s Game, which was popularised in Scientific American in 1968. Paul Alfille refined the format into the modern free-cell layout in 1978, adding the four free cells and letting any card start an empty column.
Programmer Jim Horne ported FreeCell to PCs, and Microsoft bundled it with Windows starting in 1995. That release introduced 32,000 numbered deals — famous today mostly for deal #11982, one of the very few proven unsolvable — which is why numbered deals are still how FreeCell players compare notes on a board.
playfreecell.app is an independent, modern implementation of that same ruleset. The rules are unchanged; what is new is a rendering that is smooth on a phone, a layout that keeps all sixteen piles on one screen, synthesized sound with a real mute, and quality-of-life tools — hints, safe auto-play, unlimited undo, shareable game numbers — presented without clutter.
What we stand for
Open the page and a game is already dealt. No account wall, no download, no splash video — every card is on the table before you finish reading this sentence.
One classic ruleset, no invented difficulty tiers. Unlimited undo, a real hint, and a safe auto-play button that never risks your position for you.
Best time, best score, fewest moves, and win streak live on your device. We do not hold your record hostage behind a login, because there is no login.
The whole game is free forever. No energy meters, no interstitial video ads between deals, no surprise paywall on the auto-play button.
Who it is for
playfreecell.app is a family-friendly, single-player game with no chat and no store. A poor fit if you want multiplayer or live events; a good fit if you want the real game of FreeCell, exactly as you remember it, on whatever screen is nearby.
A deal takes three to fifteen minutes. FreeCell is built for a phone on the couch or a browser tab between tasks, not a long campaign.
Every card is visible from the first move, so there is no hidden draw to blame. The entire challenge is reading the position and finding the order that clears it.
Your record stays on the device you played on. That is a deliberate trade: instant play and real privacy, with no cloud restore.
Why this site
FreeCell has thousands of implementations online. This one exists to ship a single honest, fast version — correct rules, real supermoves, and no clutter.
Dragging a run of cards respects the exact classic capacity — (open free cells + 1) × 2 per empty column — instead of an arbitrary drag limit, so the board behaves like the real game.
Every game is generated from a shareable number. Type one in to replay a specific board, or redeal the one you are on to try again with what you now know.
No auto-playing video, no fake "download our app" banners, no dark patterns around the settings. The how-to-play guide and FAQ describe this exact engine, not a generic write-up.
How we build
The game runs entirely on the web: fast loads, drag / tap / keyboard controls, and progress that stays local unless you clear your browser data. We use lightweight analytics to see what helps players — never to gate the game behind a profile. The engine on the home page is the one described on our rules pages, so search results and the live game never drift apart.
Phone, tablet, and desktop share one board. Drag with a mouse, tap on a touchscreen, or use the keyboard shortcuts for undo, hint, auto-play, and dealing.
Best time, best score, fewest moves, and streak are stored locally. You own the continuity of your record without signing up.
We watch aggregate usage through Google Analytics to improve pacing and polish. Details are in our Privacy Policy — never as a sales pitch.
